The Supreme Court of Nigeria is set to deliver its judgement on Thursday, October 26, 2023, in the cases involving the Labour Party (LP) and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi; the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Atiku Abubakar; and the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidate, Bola Tinubu.
The legal battle stems from the September 6 ruling of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT), which upheld Bola Tinubu’s victory in the February 25 presidential poll.
Atiku Abubakar and his PDP counterpart have fervently contested this decision, leading to a series of appeals that have culminated in this imminent judgement.
In Monday’s session, October 23, 2022, the Supreme Court, presided over by a seven-member panel led by Justice Inyang Okoro, announced that the judgement was reserved following the final submissions of the counsels.
The court also deliberated on a motion filed by Atiku Abubakar, seeking to introduce fresh evidence related to alleged forged documents. Atiku’s counsel, Chris Uche, advocated for the admissibility of the new evidence, asserting that it would substantiate their appeal and potentially disqualify Tinubu.
Conversely, counsels representing the respondents, including Abubakar Mahmoud for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Wole Olanipekun for President Tinubu, and Akin Olujinmi for the APC, vehemently argued for the dismissal of Atiku’s motion and appeal, citing a lack of merit.
