Two persons were burnt beyond recognition in the early hours of Saturday following an accident involving a gas tanker and a tipper truck at Tera Ahmed bus stop, Sangotedo, along the Lekki–Epe expressway, Lagos.
The victims were said to be the driver of the tipper truck and his assistant.
Three warehouses, 10 roadside shops, among them a gym and a generator house, were also affected by the inferno.
Controller General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, disclosed that the incident was reported at about 2:36 a.m., prompting the deployment of firefighters from Lekki Phase II, Oniru and Epe II fire stations.
According to her, a 20-tonne tipper truck, reportedly speeding from the Epe axis, rammed into a stationary 30-tonne gas tanker that had failed to pull off the highway.
She said the collision triggered a fire outbreak which spread to adjoining properties. She was quick to add that the fire was brought under control before it could spread to a nearby petrol filling station and a fully loaded 33,000-litre PMS tanker.
She said, “After the blaze has been doused, three Sienna bus cars, one Toyota Corolla car and a forklift parked within the aforementioned properties were recovered, just as the tipper driver and his assistant, both male adults were also recovered burnt beyond recognition while the gas truck driver escaped unhurt.
“Efforts are ongoing to evacuate the remains of both trucks on the road as normalcy has returned to the scene of the accident.”
